Shaw describes the history of Australia from that inauspicious beginning as a penal colony to the present day. His book tells about the establishment of sheep farming and the era of the squatters; the formation of society and the beginnings of organized labor; the effects of the gold rush, as a result of which the population trebled in a decade and the country was literally transformed; and the battle for federation, which culminated in the creation, in 1901, of the new Commonwealth of Australia.
