Chronicles the history, aims and charities of the Salvation Army.

If one were to ask ten people "What is the Salvation Army?" nine might answer, "Oh, yes, those people that blow horns and sing hymns on the street." The tenth might say, "You mean the gals in bonnets who ring bells outside of department stores at Christmas time?"

The familiar bonnet, iron soup kettle and brass bands may be symbols of The Salvation Army but few know the wide ramifications of this group of utterly dedicated people, whose work knows neither territorial nor racial boundary, whom we find in almost every country of the world.

Organized along military lines, with all that connotes of rank and the obedience to orders, The Salvation Army is a peaceful corps, composed of those with a true religious "call," motivated by spiritual and humanitarian ideals that are their way of life. Its goal is to save souls, to restore the self- respect of the degraded, the weak, the hope- less-the outcasts from society-and thus by helping them back to useful lives, to recruit them into God's Fraternity.

This book tells of the founders and their early history. It presents for the first time the full story of The Salvation Army, how it enrolls, educates and trains its members, how and where they live, what they are paid, their own marriage ceremonies, their religious beliefs, their diversity of work, why they use brass bands, the evolution of their uniforms and bonnets.

It also describes most vividly the many Army activities today-the Missing Persons Bureau; the homes for unwed mothers; schools for delinquents and orphans; help rendered in disasters; work with convicts, lepers, derelicts, alcoholics; the used furniture and clothing depots for fund-raising and rehabilitation; the "Bowery" missions and food stations; centers for senior citizens; re- habilitation projects; comfort and recreation for members of the armed services; as well as others.

Founded in England in 1865 by William Booth as The Christian Mission, with a small group of religious dissidents and formalized some years later, The Army has spread throughout the world, has surmounted derision, ostracism, and physical assault. It has won the gratitude, the respect and voluntary financial assistance of thousands of people everywhere.

In The Hallelujah Army there evolves a portrait of true selflessness, of dedication to the service of fellow man, of love of human beings regardless of how debased they may seem, of eternal hope for all men. It is a bright picture in the present day world of uncertainty, an exciting real life story.
