This book was done to help fund the El Paso, Texas Army Military Post, Fort Bliss. The purpose of this short study of the Military Post of Fort Bliss, Texas, is to give a picture of the evolution of one of the most romantic and interesting of our frontier military posts.
While in no sense a history, effort has been made to conform to historical accuracy. Dates and designations of units have been verified in the archives of the War Department by check with original documents. Other data are based on reliable sources.
To facilitate a further study of the dramatic times described, a selected bibliography has been appended. Because of printing requirements, no direct citation of authorities has been possible in the text. The writer wishes to acknowledge his debt to these sources and to confess that he has used them freely. In particular his thanks are due to Mrs. W. J . Glasgow (nee Magoffin) of El Paso, Texas, for the opportunity to examine and use numerous unpublished letters and documents of Samuel J. Magoffin and others.
