Part of the twins in history series by Lucy Fitch Perkins.

On the island of Salamis, just off the coast of Greece, the ten year old Spartan twins Dion and Daphne, live with their parents Melas and Lydia. Their father is overseer of a farm owned by Pericles, the greatest man of Athens. One day a stranger and philosopher, Anaxagoras, wanders onto the farm, shares the humble fare of the family, and tells the children tales of Pandora, Apollo, and Persells. Little do they realize that they will meet him soon again and playa role important to the welfare of all Athens.

The twins accompany their father by boat to the busy capital to offer Pericles a little black ram born with a single horn in the middle of its forehead-a miracle to be interpreted by the high priest as boding ill or good for the Archon of Athens. They visit the Acropolis during the Feast of Athena, become separated from their father, and overheard a plot against Pericles.

How they meet Anaxagoras again and help him expose those who would do Pericles harm makes up this exciting tale set in the time of Sophocles and Euripides. The scene ranges from the quiet olive orchards and vineyards of Salamis to the busy streets of Athens, when Greece was in its flowering in the Fifth Century, B.C.

This book cover the great festivals, the gods, history, culture and traditions of the Fifth Century BC Greece.
