It wasn't easy to be a girl in Norway in 1867.
Tonia Rosted's elegant father had little patience with females in his household. He had five daughters and only one son and that was annoying enough without Tonia's nonsense about an acting career. Nice girls did not appear on the stage!
Norwegian fathers expected obedience, but Tonia, fifteen, had a driving ambition that did not let her rest. Somehow she managed to get enough money for lessons with one of Norway's leading actors.
She worked hard that hot summer-and then the plague came to Norway's capital. Despite Tonia's nursing, her actor-teacher died. Mr. Rosted was softened by his daughter's kindness and courage and he finally gave her permission to enter the theatre.
The curtain comes down on the book with Tonia acting Puck in the Midsummer Night's Dream. Her new acting style at first brought jeers -but this soon changed to cheers-and an eager young student, his flaming red hair making him conspicuous in the gallery, applauded wildly. Tonia would certainly make a name for herself in the theatre, and the redhead would certainly play an important role in her life.
