An engagingly written and fully illustrated book on medieval attitudes toward food, its preparation and presentation. Few readers with an interest in food will fail to find this book both informative and entertaining.
Since attitudes toward food were shaped by the religious and social ideas of the period, the medieval perspective is clearly developed for the modern reader and, in turn, sheds light on the character of life in the Middle Ages. The subject is explored from the varied points of view of all concerned: host, guest, cook, and servant.
The author spent many years researching her subject. Her material has been drawn from many primary sources: devotional literature, sermons, courtesy books, recipe collections, household accounts, chronicles, and romances. Most of the documentary- - material comes from works written in England during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, but there is some reference to those of other periods and other countries.
Fast and Feast is attractively illustrated with 46 pictures selected from early manuscripts. A number of dining scenes have been included, and special care has been taken in the search for kitchen scenes and details. Because they were rarely deemed worthy as illustrations in medieval art, such pictures are hard to find. Their inclusion adds to the richness and flavor of the book.
Students of food and its history or of medieval life and literature will find Fast and Feast invaluable for its accuracy and thoroughness, and the general reader will be attracted by its lively and engaging narrative style.
Chapters include: introduction, mealtimes, fast and feast, cook and kitchen, methods and menus, laying the table, manners maketh man, entertainment: surprise and sotelty, notes, bibliography and index.
