A delightful story of teens/pre-teens in New Amsterdam and the Hudson River Valley in 1693. The story is placed in the village of Onderdonckelberg, where the Dutch, British and Caribbean Pirate societies mix. We forget today how the pirates of that era were in the main English men, and who spent a great deal of time as licensed Privateers living free in the cities of Britain's colonies.
11 year old Lise Vernel came from the West Indies to a tiny town in Hudson River village without knowing a soul. She gets into trouble because even in the 17th century, girls who would rather sail boats than stitch were called tomboys, and tomboys were bound to get into trouble.
She and two friends run into a stranded whale, a missing shipment & a crew of pirates.
