Although Katie Rose Belford thought she had recovered from her infatuation for Bruce Seerie, it was hard to ignore the flutterings inside her whenever she passed him in the halls at school. She protected herself from his lack of interest by throwing herself energetically into the school Drama Society-feeling sure she would get a major part in a forthcoming musical production.
But March seemed to bring nothing but anguish. The days were gray, and not enough good things happened to balance the heavy let-downs.
The Belford family itself, with a houseful of children, relatives, friends, and all the paraphernalia that goes with individualists who are continually in motion, is a hard place for a girl who is building up anguish that can break her in two. Life is so eventful that no one pauses long enough to understand. Or perhaps it was because Katie Rose, herself, was the one they all depended on to understand their troubles.
Katie Rose's feelings were deeper and more painful than, for instance, those of her sister Stacy, who was able to laugh and cry so wholeheartedly that she bounced back easily into a serene view of the world. Katie Rose's own emotional crisis began building as the result of a humiliating episode with Stacy, and nothing turned out right after that. Then came a day when all of life seemed unendurable to Katie Rose.
But at this lowest point she was suddenly thrust into a circumstance so violent that she was forced to marshal all of her inner resources. Katie Rose's ordeal provided the strong jolt she needed. And then, how fortunate she was to be surrounded by a family full of love, as well as friends-including slap-dash Miguel and gentle Jeannie-who were there when she needed them.
Lenora Mattingly Weber, who is beloved for her wonderful books about the Malone family, tells here another story about the delightful Belfords. Katie Rose is a more introspective and, in some ways, a more mature heroine than Beanie Malone, and equally endearing.
A great book by the author of the Beany Malone Books.
