A great vintage car racing book.

It's the combination that counts in racing. First there was Al Duncan, a forty-two-year-old top mechanic with a dream to get "back to the dirt, back to the noisy Sundays." Everyone wondered if he'd forgotten his age.

Then there was Mark Devlin, one of a group scornfully labeled the "grease balls" by the more social and political guys in his high school. Mark spent most of his spare time in Al's garage, which was a kind of playpen for the group. He'd converted an old Ford with a blown Dodge engine and had raced in drag and jalopy races, but Mark had never driven a car designed for racing until the "blue lady."

The third member of the combination was a light-blue Rafield into which Al had put a D-O four with the built-in genius of Stan Nowak. It was a car that "went where you pointed it, answered every summons without hesitation, happily at home on the surface it was tailored for."

Al's wrench and the Nowak engine made a strong two-thirds of the combination, but that wasn't enough. While Mark grew to fill his position of driver through race after race, he learned the real meaning of the dirt-track league and the reason he was there. The result was a combination that couldn't be sold out.
