The story in the Louisville Courier- Journal on the eve of the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 read, "Today will be historic in Kentucky annals as the first 'Derby Day' of what promises to be a long series of annual turf festivities which we confidently expect our grandchildren, a hundred years hence, to celebrate in glorious rejoicings. ..."

A century later the prestigious "Run for the Roses" has lived up to those early expectations. Since the inaugural, witnessed by some 10,000 spectators, the Derby has grown in popularity to where more than 100,000 fans now crowd ancient Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May and millions more watch via TV.

By all odds, the Kentucky Derby has become the most celebrated, most glamorous, and most widely heralded horse race in America. As a spectacle, it ranks with such other super-attractions as the World Series, the Super Bowl, the Indy 500, and the Rose Bowl.

Here in Run for the Roses, author Jim Bolus, of the Louisville Courier- Journal, captures all the color and excitement of the "greatest two minutes in sport." This is a chronicle in words and pictures of events, people, and horses covering every Derby since 1875 and stretching all those "two minutes" into 100 years of history and tradition .

So settle back with mint julep in hand and witness for yourself the social event of an age. See the women in their fine fashions and the $2 bettors rubbing shoulders with millionaires, royalty, and chiefs of state. Read about the giant little men, jockeys such as Bill Hartack, Bill Shoemaker, and Eddie Arcaro, and hard-riding blacks Oliver Lewis, winner of the first Derby, and Isaac Murphy, who won it three times. And catch a close-up of Diane Crump, the first girl jockey to ride in the Derby.

Come into the paddock and hear the tales of the thoroughbreds, from dark horses to favorites. ..from Whirlaway and Citation to Exterminator, Zev, Twenty Grand, Johnstown, Swaps, and Secretariat, the 1973 winner of the Triple Crown. Get the behind-the-barn view from celebrated trainers like Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, Ben and Jimmy Jones, Max Hirsch, and owners ranging from the Whitneys to the Tweedys.

No straight history, Run for the Roses covers the controversies and scandals (from Apollo to Dancer's Image), the fizzles (Silky Sullivan), stretch runs (Brokers Tip and Head Play), and the long-shot winners.

Rub elbows with such Derby visitors as Greer Garson, Jack Dempsey, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Bob Hope, Happy Chandler, Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, Richard Nixon, Claudette Colbert, Joe E. Brown, Prince Rainier, III, Robert Young, Don Ameche, Lana Turner, and Lord Derby.

See reruns of all the races, from Done- rail' s victory in 1913 which returned the fattest price ($184.90 for each $2 ticket) to the 1957 ride of Willie Shoe- maker on Gallant Man when Willie seemingly had the race won but misjudged the finish line, pulled up too soon, and lost to Bill Hartack, riding Iron Liege.

Run for the Roses has more than 150 unusual photos obtained from the archives of the Louisville Courier-]ournal, Caufield & Shook, Keeneland Library, UPI, and other sources.

A reference section provides the race- by-race summaries, and there is also a listing of the all-time earnings of every Derby winner.
