This is the FIRST FULL ACCOUNT OF NAVAL AVIATION in action in VIETNAM. Experts Polmar and Mersky trace the employment of such famous fighter and attack aircraft as the thoroughbred F-8 Crusader, the workhorse F-4 Phantom, and the sturdy A-4 Sky- hawk from catapult launch to target engagement. During ten years of fierce fighting, American naval aviation took the war to the enemy in the North and supported allied forces in the South-steadily, professionally, and courageously.
Few noticed the daring of our air aces, the adventures of our search and rescue crews, the stony battlefield soldiering of the Marine fliers at Khe Sanh, where they provided close air support for their infantry. Few remember the innovative uses of the Sea Wolf helicopters flown from the tiny decks of LSTs in the Mekong River's Rung Sat Special zone. And who has read of the endless days of reconnaissance and land- or sea-based coastal patrol carried out by the last great P-5 Marlin seaplanes, the P-2 Neptunes, and P-3 Orions. The authors tell us of these missions and of the even less known Navy OP-2 Neptunes who sought out movement on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Naval air had a major part in the last moments of the war too, with the successful mining of Haiphong Harbor, which forced North Vietnam to the settlement of the war, and the evacuation of the South.
Mersky and Polmar describe the exhilarating, the exhausting and the tragic dimensions of the war we did fight and the war we did not fight in numerous episodes drawn from the personal experiences of our pilots.
The MORE than 200 PHOTOGRAPHS in this book provide a cockpit view of the war as it was seen by our aviators, flight deck crews, Marines, and support personnel.
