If a Wellington returned from a raid with a gaping hole where the rear-gunner had been shot away, and the fuselage stripped to a naked geodetic skeleton, its return was a tribute to Vickers workers, to Barnes Wallis’ design, and to the surviving crew, who brought it home. And the more Wellingtons struggled home crippled from Europe, the greater became the RAF’s affection for it. A few maps; many historic photos.
