When Pete comes to fix a leak in the house, Emily and Dick start to wonder about some of the things that happen. It turns out that Pete has a miniature ladder that enlarges to full size when it's opened. And if one stands on the red step and makes a wish to be elsewhere, it happens.
Then Emily discovers that a pencil is magic. When she writes graham crackers on a box, the crackers are there, and when she writes "4" on the back of her hand, she shrinks! The ladder and pencil initiate a series of adventures for a brother and sister, and a mysterious cat.
